Brand Graphics: Illustrations VS Accents

I refuse to create boring brands. Let's face it, there's enough of those lurking around.

Instead, I like to create brands that are visually intriguing, something that will catch your eye and keep your attention.

Because the brands I design for aren't just businesses - they're ART.

While logos and color palettes are foundational elements of a good brand, brand graphics (like illustrations and accents) add depth, personality, and a signature touch that helps you stand out from the crowd.

But what exactly are the differences between brand illustrations and brand accents? Why do you need both?

Brand Illustrations: The Storytellers

Brand illustrations are detailed, custom visuals that help tell your brand’s story. They often feature intricate designs, unique elements, and artistic flourishes that make them stand out.

These can include:

  • Symbolic illustrations like hands

  • Scene-based artwork like gothic arches

  • Hand-drawn elements that represent your brand’s personality

Because they’re detailed and eye-catching, brand illustrations are best used in spaces where they can be appreciated fully. You might see them used in logos, on website homepages, merch, product packaging, or as key visuals in marketing campaigns.

Brand Accents: The Subtle Reinforcements

Brand accents, on the other hand, are small, simple graphic elements designed to enhance your branding without stealing the show.

These can include:

  • Minimalist icons

  • Decorative linework

  • Small motifs like stars, flourishes, or geometric shapes

These accents are perfect for filling negative space, tying different brand materials together, and adding visual interest. You’ll often see them at the bottom of a website, as a corner detail on a social media post, used in logos, or placed in marketing materials to maintain a cohesive vibe.

Why You Need Both

I believe that brands should be well-rounded and immersive, and that's done through a combination of strategy, experience, and visuals.

Brand illustrations bring depth and storytelling, while brand accents provide balance and consistency.

Together, they:

  • Create a visual intrigue - Detailed illustrations grab attention, while accents support without overwhelming.

  • Maintain consistency - Accents ensure that even the smallest details stay on-brand.

  • Enhance brand recognition - Unique illustrations make your brand stand out, and accents reinforce that identity across all touchpoints.

By combining both, your brand will feel layered, intentional, and visually engaging.
